About the artist
Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847–1915) was a Japanese artist known for his woodblock prints and paintings, particularly his landscapes and scenes of daily life during the Meiji period. He played a significant role in the transition of ukiyo-e woodblock printing into the modern era, incorporating Western techniques and perspectives into his works. Kiyochika's prints often featured dramatic compositions, bold contrasts of light and shadow, and innovative use of perspective. He captured the rapidly changing landscape of Japan during the Meiji Restoration, providing valuable historical and cultural insights through his art.
