About the artist
Ichiryusai Yoshitoyo was a notable Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo period, known for his vibrant woodblock prints. A student of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Yoshitoyo's work is celebrated for its dynamic compositions and bold use of colour. He specialised in depicting kabuki actors, historical scenes, and beautiful women, often infusing his prints with a sense of drama and movement. Despite his relatively short career, Yoshitoyo left a significant mark on the ukiyo-e tradition, contributing to its enduring popularity and influencing subsequent generations of artists.
