About the artist

Elizabeth Gould
1804—1841
Elizabeth Gould was a British artist and illustrator renowned for her detailed and lifelike depictions of birds. Collaborating closely with her husband, ornithologist John Gould, she produced over 600 illustrations for works such as A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains and The Birds of Australia. Her artistry combined scientific accuracy with aesthetic appeal, significantly contributing to 19th-century ornithological studies. Notably, her illustration of the Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo perched on a banksia bush exemplifies her ability to capture the essence of avian subjects within their natural habitats. Despite her substantial contributions, Elizabeth's work was often overshadowed by her husband's prominence.
