Pierre Soulages (1919–2022) was a French artist known for his significant contributions to abstract art. He was renowned for his exploration of the colour black, which he used as the primary focus of his work. Soulages' paintings often featured bold, gestural brushstrokes and textured surfaces, creating dynamic interplays of light and shadow. He coined the term "outrenoir" (beyond black) to describe his approach to painting, emphasising the depth and complexity of the colour black. Soulages' innovative use of texture and light earned him international acclaim, solidifying his legacy as one of the foremost abstract painters of the 20th century.
