About the artist
Soga Shohaku (1730-1781) was a distinguished Japanese painter of the Edo period, renowned for his bold and imaginative style. A member of the eccentric painters known as the "eccentric school" (Kiheitai), Shohaku's work is characterised by its dramatic compositions, dynamic brushwork, and unconventional themes. He often depicted mythical and supernatural subjects, bringing them to life with a distinctive blend of realism and fantasy. His large-scale ink paintings and screens, such as "Dragons and Clouds" and "Ghosts," showcase his masterful use of monochrome ink and his ability to convey movement and emotion.
