About the artist

Kawanabe Kyosai
1831—1889
Kawanabe Kyosai was a prolific Japanese artist known for his versatility and exuberant style. Trained in both the traditional Kano school and ukiyo-e, Kyosai excelled in painting, printmaking, and caricature. His works range from satirical and humorous sketches to detailed and dynamic depictions of mythical and supernatural subjects. Kyosai's keen eye for social commentary and his spirited brushwork made him a distinctive figure in the Meiji period. Despite facing censorship and political challenges, his art remained vibrant and influential.
