About the artist
Xu Beihong (1895-1953) was a prominent Chinese artist and educator known for his contributions to modern Chinese art. He combined traditional Chinese ink painting techniques with Western realism, creating a unique style that bridged East and West. Xu's work often depicted horses, reflecting his belief in the animal's symbolic significance of strength and freedom. He also played a crucial role in modernizing art education in China and served as the president of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Xu Beihong's legacy as a leading figure in 20th-century Chinese art remains influential to this day.
