Jan van Kessel the Elder (1626–1679) was a Flemish Baroque painter known for his meticulously detailed still-life paintings and miniature insect studies. He was a member of a prominent family of artists and trained under his father, Hieronymus van Kessel, before further developing his skills under David Teniers the Younger. Van Kessel's paintings often featured elaborate arrangements of flowers, fruits, insects, and other natural objects, rendered with remarkable precision and attention to detail. His work demonstrates a keen interest in the natural world and reflects the scientific curiosity of the Baroque period.
