About the artist
Kawai Gyokudo (1873-1957) was a renowned Japanese painter, celebrated for his contributions to nihonga, a traditional style of Japanese painting. Born in Aichi Prefecture, Gyokudo's work is characterised by its delicate brushwork, subtle use of colour, and a profound sensitivity to nature. His paintings often depict serene landscapes, seasonal changes, and scenes of everyday rural life, capturing the beauty and tranquility of the Japanese countryside. Gyokudo's dedication to preserving and revitalising traditional Japanese art earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Order of Culture.
