Jean-Michel Basquiat

Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was an American artist known for his influential work in the Neo-Expressionist movement. Basquiat's art was deeply rooted in his experiences as a young Black artist in New York City during the 1970s and 1980s. He explored themes of race, identity, and the human condition through his use of bold, gestural lines, text, and symbols. Basquiat's work was highly regarded during his brief career, and he became the youngest artist to exhibit at the Whitney Biennial in 1983. He died at the age of 27 from a drug overdose, but his legacy as an important figure in contemporary art has continued to grow.
