Zarina
Zarina Hashmi (1937–2020), known professionally as Zarina, was an Indian American artist and printmaker celebrated for her minimalist works that explore themes of home, displacement, and memory. Born in Aligarh, India, she earned a degree in mathematics before studying printmaking techniques in Bangkok, Tokyo, and Paris, where she apprenticed under Stanley William Hayter at Atelier 17. Her art, encompassing drawing, printmaking, and sculpture, is characterised by abstract and geometric forms, often incorporating elements of Islamic architecture and Urdu calligraphy. Zarina's works are included in major international institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Throughout her career, she poignantly addressed the concept of home as a fluid, abstract space, reflecting her own experiences of migration and exile.
