Tsubaki Chinzan
1801—1854Tsubaki Chinzan was a distinguished Japanese painter of the late Edo period, known for his contributions to the Nanga (Southern School) painting tradition. Originally trained in the Kano school, Chinzan later embraced the Nanga style, which was influenced by Chinese literati painting. His works are characterised by their elegant compositions, refined brushwork, and harmonious use of colour, often depicting landscapes, flowers, and birds. Chinzan's paintings reflect a deep appreciation for nature and a poetic sensibility, capturing the serene beauty of the natural world. In addition to his artistic achievements, he was also a respected calligrapher and scholar.
