E.L. Trouvelot
1827—1895Étienne Léopold Trouvelot was a French artist and astronomer renowned for his detailed astronomical illustrations. After emigrating to the United States in 1851, he joined the Harvard College Observatory in 1872, where he produced over 7,000 drawings of celestial objects. His works, such as The Trouvelot Astronomical Drawings (1882), are celebrated for their scientific accuracy and artistic beauty. Trouvelot also published approximately 50 scientific papers and discovered "veiled spots" on the Sun in 1875. However, he is controversially remembered for inadvertently introducing the spongy moth to North America, leading to significant ecological damage.
