About the artist
Wassily Kandinsky
1866—1944
Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian painter and art theorist who is credited with pioneering abstract art. He was a key figure in the development of the Expressionist movement, and his art was characterised by its use of bold colours and abstract, geometric forms. Kandinsky believed that art should be able to evoke spiritual experiences in its viewers, and he developed a complex theory of colour and form that underpinned his artistic practice. His work had a profound impact on modern art, and he remains an important figure in the history of abstraction.
