About the artist
J. Alden Weir (1852–1919) was an American Impressionist painter and one of the leading figures of the American art scene in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born into an artistic family, Weir studied in New York and later in Paris, where he was exposed to the Impressionist movement. He returned to the United States and became a prominent member of the Cos Cob Art Colony in Connecticut. Weir's paintings often depicted rural landscapes, gardens, and figure studies, characterised by loose brushwork, vibrant colours, and a keen observation of light and atmosphere. He was also instrumental in founding the National Academy of Design and played a significant role in promoting Impressionism in America.
