About the artist
William Merritt Chase (1849–1916) was a prominent American Impressionist painter known for his contributions to the American art scene during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was an influential teacher, having founded the Chase School of Art (later known as the New York School of Art) and the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art. Chase's art often featured portraiture, landscapes, and still life, characterised by a mastery of light, colour, and brushwork. His work helped bridge American art to the Impressionist movement, leaving a significant mark on the development of American art.
