About the artist
William Lamb Picknell (1853–1897) was an American Impressionist painter known for his atmospheric landscapes and marine scenes. Born in Vermont, Picknell studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School and later in Paris, where he was influenced by French Impressionism. He traveled extensively throughout Europe, painting scenes of rural landscapes, coastal vistas, and village life. Picknell's works are characterised by their loose brushwork, vibrant colours, and emphasis on capturing the effects of light and atmosphere. He was particularly skilled at depicting the play of light on water and the subtle nuances of sky and sea. Picknell's paintings evoke a sense of tranquility and serenity, inviting viewers to contemplate the beauty of the natural world.
