About the artist

Kono Bairei
1844—1895
Kono Bairei was a Japanese painter and calligrapher of the Meiji era. He was a master of the Nanga style, which drew inspiration from Chinese literati painting. Bairei's works often depicted landscapes, birds, and flowers with a refined simplicity and elegance. He also founded an influential art school called the Shijō School, which emphasized the fusion of traditional Japanese and Chinese painting techniques. Bairei's artistic legacy continues to be celebrated in Japan, and his influence can be seen in the development of modern Japanese painting.
