About the artist

John Stephenson
1871—1933
John Stephenson was a British zoologist and surgeon whose career in the Indian Medical Service profoundly shaped his scientific and artistic contributions. As a civil surgeon and later a professor of zoology in India, Stephenson developed a deep knowledge of regional fauna, specialising in earthworm taxonomy. His detailed anatomical studies fuelled his skill in biological illustration, combining scientific precision with artistry to document species with accuracy and clarity. After returning to the UK, Stephenson continued his work as an editor for the Fauna of British India series, where his illustrations played a vital role in cataloguing and understanding the biodiversity of the subcontinent.
