About the artist
Theo van Doesburg (1883–1931) was a Dutch artist, architect, and founder of the De Stijl movement. He was instrumental in promoting the principles of abstraction, geometric simplicity, and the use of primary colours in art and architecture. Van Doesburg's artworks, including paintings, drawings, and designs, exemplified the De Stijl aesthetic, characterised by its emphasis on horizontal and vertical lines, rectangular shapes, and a reduction of form to its essential elements. He also played a key role in disseminating De Stijl ideas through his writings and editorship of the movement's journal.
