About the artist
Katsukawa Shunzan (active c. 1782-1798) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist and a prominent member of the Katsukawa school, which specialised in woodblock prints. A student of Katsukawa Shunsho, Shunzan is best known for his vibrant and dynamic depictions of kabuki actors and bijin-ga (images of beautiful women). His work is characterised by its bold compositions, expressive line work, and attention to detail, capturing the theatrical flair and elegance of Edo-period Japan. Shunzan's prints contributed to the popularity of ukiyo-e and the Katsukawa school's influence, helping to shape the visual culture of his time.
