About the artist
Edward Joseph Lowe (1825–1900) was an English botanist and entrepreneur known for his contributions to the field of horticulture and for popularizing the use of peat moss in gardening. Lowe was particularly interested in the study of plants and developed a keen interest in mosses and their potential applications. In 1850, he established a business selling sphagnum moss (peat moss) as a growing medium and soil conditioner. Lowe's efforts helped revolutionize gardening practices, and peat moss became widely used in horticulture. He also authored several books and articles on gardening and botany, further sharing his knowledge and expertise with the public.
