About the artist

Ogata Gekko (1859–1920) was a prominent Japanese artist during the Meiji period, celebrated for his contributions to both traditional ukiyo-e woodblock prints and modern yōga-style paintings. Gekko's versatile oeuvre encapsulates a period of significant cultural and artistic transition in Japan. His subjects ranged from historical scenes and warriors to landscapes and bird-and-flower motifs. While his work is rooted in traditional Japanese aesthetics, Gekko incorporated Western techniques and perspectives, bridging the gap between Japan's storied past and its rapidly modernizing future.
