About the artist
Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795) was a pioneering Japanese artist and the founder of the Maruyama-Shijō school of painting. Known for his naturalistic style, Ōkyo blended traditional Japanese techniques with Western realism, creating a distinctive approach that captured the essence of his subjects with remarkable accuracy and detail. His work encompassed a wide range of themes, including landscapes, animals, and figures, characterised by their lifelike quality and dynamic compositions. Ōkyo's innovative methods and keen observation skills significantly influenced Japanese art, bridging classical and modern styles.
