About the artist

Yamamoto Shunkyo
1871—1933
Yamamoto Shunkyo was a distinguished Japanese painter renowned for his contributions to the Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) movement. Born in Shiga Prefecture, he trained under prominent artists Kōno Bairei, Nomura Bunkyo, and Mori Kansai in Kyoto. Shunkyo's work is celebrated for its fusion of traditional Japanese aesthetics with Western techniques, particularly in rendering light and perspective. His landscapes often feature meticulous details and vibrant colours, capturing the natural beauty of Japan. In 1899, he became a professor at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts, influencing a generation of artists. Shunkyo's legacy endures through his innovative approach to Japanese painting and his role in modernising the Kyoto art scene.
