About the artist
Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was a pivotal Japanese artist in the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement, which revitalised traditional ukiyo-e art for the modern era. Renowned for his atmospheric landscapes, Hasui masterfully depicted scenes from across Japan, capturing its diverse beauty through changing seasons and moods. Collaborating closely with publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, a driving force behind shin-hanga, Hasui's meticulous prints blended traditional techniques with contemporary subjects. His dedication to the movement and his distinctive style ensured his position as one of the most celebrated shin-hanga artists of the 20th century.
