About the artist
Simon Hantaï (1922–2008) was a Hungarian-French abstract painter associated with the Art Informel movement. He was known for his innovative approach to painting, which involved folding and crumpling canvases before applying paint, creating intricate patterns and textures. Hantaï's work evolved over time, from his early explorations of automatism and Surrealism to his later experiments with the "pliage" technique, where he would fold and knot the canvas to create dynamic compositions. His art was characterized by its spontaneity, rhythm, and exploration of the subconscious.
