About the artist

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was an Austrian symbolist painter and a key figure of the Art Nouveau movement. He is best known for his sensual and highly decorative portraits, landscapes, and allegorical works, which often feature gold leaf and intricate patterns. Klimt's work was controversial in his time, but has since become highly celebrated for its innovative style and expressive power. He was also a founder of the Vienna Secession, a group of artists who sought to break with traditional art styles and promote new forms of artistic expression.
