About the artist
Jacques-Louis David was a French Neoclassical painter considered one of the most prominent artists of his time. Known for his highly detailed and idealised portrayals, David became famous for his historical and mythological subjects, often depicting scenes from ancient Greek and Roman history. His paintings, characterised by their precise composition, strong emotional impact, and dramatic lighting, played a significant role in shaping the aesthetic and political landscape of France during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. David was also deeply involved in the French Revolution and Napoleonic era, using his art to support revolutionary ideals and glorify the regime of Napoleon Bonaparte.
