About the artist
Charles Melville Scammon (1825–1911) was an American whaleman, naturalist, and entrepreneur known for his contributions to the study of marine mammals, particularly whales. He gained renown for his pioneering efforts in the whaling industry along the Pacific coast of North America during the 19th century. Scammon's most notable achievement was his discovery and documentation of the breeding grounds of the gray whale off the coast of Baja California, Mexico. His work provided valuable insights into the behavior and migration patterns of whales, contributing to the early understanding of these magnificent creatures.
