About the artist
Shibata Zeshin (1807–1891) was a renowned Japanese lacquer artist known for his innovative techniques and exquisite craftsmanship. He played a crucial role in revitalizing the traditional art of lacquerware during the late Edo period and early Meiji era. Zeshin's works often featured intricate designs, elaborate compositions, and richly detailed motifs, inspired by nature, mythology, and historical themes. He experimented with various lacquer techniques, including inlay, relief, and maki-e (gold and silver decoration), pushing the boundaries of what was possible in lacquer art.
