About the artist
Frank Duveneck was an American painter known for his role in the development of American Realism and his influence on the American art scene of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Kentucky, Duveneck studied in Germany and Italy, where he was exposed to the techniques of European Old Masters. He later returned to the United States and became a prominent figure in the Cincinnati art community. Duveneck's style was characterised by bold brushwork, strong contrasts of light and shadow, and a focus on capturing the essence of his subjects with directness and honesty. He is perhaps best known for his portraits, as well as his depictions of everyday life and landscapes.
