About the artist
Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) was an American modernist painter, renowned for his emotive and bold use of color and form. Often associated with American Modernism, he was part of the circle of artists around Alfred Stieglitz in New York. Hartley's works ranged from abstract to representational, but he is best known for his powerful landscapes, especially those of his native Maine, and his symbolic portraits which often contained encoded references to his own personal experiences. His distinctive style and vision place him among the forefront of early 20th-century American artists.
