About the artist
Juan Gris (1887–1927) was a Spanish painter and key figure in the development of Cubism. Born José Victoriano González-Pérez in Madrid, Gris moved to Paris in 1906, where he became associated with the avant-garde artistic circles. Influenced by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, Gris developed his unique style of Cubism, characterised by geometric forms, fragmented compositions, and a restrained palette. He was particularly known for his still-life paintings, which often incorporated everyday objects such as newspapers, glasses, and musical instruments. Gris' meticulous attention to detail and subtle use of colour set him apart from other Cubist artists.
