About the artist

Utagawa Kuniyoshi
1797—1861
Utagawa Kuniyoshi was a prolific Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock print artist during the Edo period. Celebrated for his innovative and dynamic compositions, Kuniyoshi excelled in depicting warriors, folklore, and kabuki actors. His mastery of line work and imaginative designs made him a leading figure in the Utagawa school. Kuniyoshi's prints, such as those from the series "108 Heroes of the Suikoden," are characterized by their bold colors, intricate details, and a sense of drama that captivated audiences of his time.
