About the artist

André Derain
1880—1954
André Derain was a French painter and co-founder of the Fauvist movement, known for his vibrant use of colour and bold, expressive brushstrokes. Alongside artists like Henri Matisse, Derain revolutionised early 20th-century art by rejecting naturalistic representation in favour of heightened, emotional colour schemes. His works often depicted landscapes, cityscapes, and still lifes, with a focus on light and colour contrasts.
