About the artist
Édouard Manet (1832–1883) was a pivotal French painter who bridged the gap between Realism and Impressionism. Challenging traditional artistic conventions, Manet's provocative works, such as "Olympia" and "The Luncheon on the Grass," often sparked controversy but paved the way for the avant-garde movement. With bold brushwork and a masterful treatment of light, he captured modern Parisian life in all its facets. While often associated with the Impressionists, Manet maintained a distinct style that profoundly influenced the course of modern art.
