About the artist
Jules Breton (1827–1906) was a French Realist painter known for his depictions of rural life and peasant subjects. Born in Courrières, France, Breton studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was influenced by the Barbizon School painters as well as the Realist movement. He became renowned for his empathetic and romantic portrayals of the French countryside, often featuring scenes of farmers, fieldworkers, and pastoral landscapes. Breton's paintings are characterised by their meticulous attention to detail, warm earthy tones, and evocative use of light. His work captured the dignity and humanity of rural life, earning him widespread acclaim both in France and abroad.
