About the artist
John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) was an acclaimed American portrait artist known for his remarkable ability to capture the character and essence of his subjects. Born to American parents in Italy, he trained in Paris before establishing his career in London. Sargent quickly gained fame for his masterful technique and the vivacity of his portraits, such as "Madame X" and "Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose." While best known for portraiture, Sargent also painted landscapes and watercolors. His exquisite depictions of society figures and his innovative techniques have solidified him as one of the leading painters of the late 19th century.
