About the artist
Utagawa Yoshitsuya (1822–1866) was a renowned Japanese ukiyo-e artist during the late Edo period. He is celebrated for his dynamic and dramatic warrior prints, showcasing scenes from history, folklore, and kabuki theater. Yoshitsuya's innovative compositions, bold use of color, and intricate details set his work apart. He belonged to the Utagawa school and continued its tradition of excellence. His prints, particularly those featuring legendary warriors and battles, remain highly regarded for their artistic skill and their representation of a turbulent era in Japanese history.
