Gustav Klimt était un peintre symboliste autrichien et une figure majeure du mouvement Art nouveau. Il est surtout connu pour ses portraits sensuels et richement décoratifs, ses paysages et ses œuvres allégoriques, souvent rehaussés de feuilles d'or et de motifs complexes. Son œuvre, controversée à son époque, est aujourd'hui largement célébrée pour son style novateur et sa force expressive. Il fut également cofondateur de la Sécession viennoise, un groupe d'artistes cherchant à rompre avec les styles traditionnels et à promouvoir de nouvelles formes d'expression artistique.
