About the artist
Mark Rothko (1903-1970) was a Latvian-American painter and a key figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement. He is known for his large-scale, color field paintings that often feature floating rectangular shapes in muted or intense colors. Rothko's work is marked by its emotional depth and spirituality, and he sought to create a sense of transcendence in his viewers through his art. He was an important figure in the development of color field painting, and his work continues to be celebrated for its powerful, meditative quality. Rothko is considered one of the most significant American artists of the 20th century.
