Max Beckmann
1884—1950Max Beckmann was a German painter, printmaker, and sculptor associated with the Expressionist movement. Born in Leipzig, Beckmann studied at the Weimar Academy of Fine Arts and later became associated with the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) movement. He is known for his powerful and often haunting depictions of the human condition, influenced by his experiences during World War I and the social upheavals of interwar Germany. Beckmann's works often feature distorted figures, vivid colours, and symbolic imagery, exploring themes of anxiety, alienation, and the complexities of modern life.
